About the talk:
The past few decades have witnessed the rise of the field of ancient DNA, enabling scientists to extract and sequence DNA from ancient remains such as bones and teeth. The ability to directly read the DNA of long-dead individuals has transformed the study of our past into a data-rich science and reshaped our understanding of human evolution and history. It provided new insights on our relationships with archaic relatives such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, and uncovered migration patterns that shaped modern populations.
In this lecture Prof. Carmel will explore how ancient DNA research has transformed our understanding of the human past by studying both genetics, which examines the DNA sequence itself, and epigenetics, which investigates the chemical modifications that influence how genes are used. Prof Carmel will explain what ancient DNA is, highlight major achievements in the field, and show how these discoveries have rewritten the story of our species and deepened our understanding of how we came to be who we are today.
